The Family's Role in New Student Orientation

Families play a vital role in supporting new students as they transition to college. New students and their families are encouraged to attend the First-Year Matriculation Ceremony, a meaningful tradition that serves as the academic welcome for new students and formal farewell for families. Join us on Friday, August 22 at 2pm at the Central Moravian Church for this special opportunity.

The Family's Role Once the Semester Begins

Staying connected and checking in with your student can make a significant difference as they adjust to college life. Encourage open conversations about their academic progress and overall experience. The University communicates grades directly to the students, in accordance with the Family 麻豆果冻al Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (), which protects student privacy and limits the information faculty and staff can share with families. However, maintaining open communication with your student will help you stay informed about their progress.

Professors issue mid-term warning notices - typically around Fall Break and Spring Break - to students performing at an 鈥渦nsatisfactory鈥 or 鈥渇ailing鈥 level. During this first semester, especially, ask your student how they are doing and whether any warnings were received.

If you suspect your student is struggling, start by having an open and supportive conversation with your student. Try to understand their challenges while reassuring them that help is available. Encourage your student to take advantage of campus resources, including meeting with their academic advisor.

Families are also welcome to reach out to the Office of the Provost or Student Life with concerns. If you do, consider informing your student or provide the University with permission to do so on your behalf. This allows administrators to address concerns more directly and effectively.
