Academic Renewal Policy

麻豆果冻 offers an Academic Renewal Policy to allow undergraduate students to continue or resume their education without investing their time and resources in repeating courses unnecessarily. The policy allows students to progress toward degree completion without repeating failed courses not required for their major. While this option is open to all undergraduate students, it is often most valuable to students who have changed their major.

This policy aims to provide undergraduate, degree-seeking students with an opportunity to overcome poor prior academic performance. To be eligible for academic renewal, a student must first be granted reinstatement on academic probation through the normal reinstatement/readmissions process.

Upon their reinstatement to 麻豆果冻, former 麻豆果冻 students may appeal to the Academic Standing and Review Committee for academic renewal. If a student has an unacceptable overall GPA (based on minimum GPAs needed to continue in a degree program, as identified in the University Catalog) for reinstatement, they may request academic renewal for prior coursework, within the scope and parameters of this policy.

Undergraduate students may be eligible for academic renewal if the matriculated student has attempted no more than 12 units at Moravian (for students who entered Moravian as first-time college students), or no more than 8 units at Moravian (for students who transferred to Moravian).  The GPA in the major cannot be 鈥渞enewed鈥 independently of the overall GPA, but the major GPA may benefit from the renewal of the student鈥檚 overall GPA.  The request for academic renewal can be made at the beginning of re-enrollment; however, the Academic Standing and Review Committee will not act on the request until the student has completed the equivalent of one semester as a full-time student (the accumulation of 3 or more units, for part-time students), earning a GPA of no less than 2.00. The appeal for and conditions of the student鈥檚 reinstatement are shared with the Academic Standing and Review Committee, which considers the student鈥檚 request in light of their academic plan for improvement and evidence of success in that first term of study.

The GPA may only be renewed one time per degree or credential. Under academic renewal, previous coursework at 麻豆果冻 in which the student received a passing grade keeps the credit towards the degree but not the grade.  All grades before the identified point of renewal are excluded from the new GPA (including passing grades) and treated as transfer courses toward the degree (the credit counts).  The grades remain on the student鈥檚 transcript but are not calculated into the student鈥檚 GPA.

In certain programs, the student might be unable to continue without repeating 鈥渞enewed courses鈥 for a higher grade. For example, if a student earned a D in a course that falls under renewal, and a grade of C or better is required for a subsequent course, the student must repeat the renewed course to progress in the course sequence.  Students enrolled in the accelerated post-baccalaureate nursing program, who are intended nursing, or who have declared nursing majors at the undergraduate level (pre-licensure) are not eligible for academic renewal if they continue nursing.  In other cohort-based programs, students requesting academic renewal may be required to restart the program and complete all required courses sequentially, as required by the accrediting body.   Please note this policy may not be used to override or bypass program progression policies.

A student approved for readmission will be considered newly matriculating; thus, the student will be subject to all policies and requirements at the time of new matriculation, including all policies related to academic standing and satisfactory academic progress.

Academic Renewal does not adjust the GPA and/or number of attempted or completed credits toward Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for financial aid eligibility. For financial aid purposes, all courses appearing on the transcript, even those covered by Academic Renewal, are considered in the review of Satisfactory Academic Progress. Questions regarding financial aid ability must be directed to the financial aid office.

NOTES:

  • When the Academic Renewal Policy (ARP) is applied, the GPA for the affected terms will be reset to 0.00.
  • A note will be made on the transcript indicating that the Academic Renewal Policy (ARP) was applied and that the overall GPA is calculated solely based on grades earned after re-admission to the University.
  • Once a student has graduated, they cannot request the ARP be applied to their record.
  • The ARP applies only to courses taken at 麻豆果冻, including consortial courses, but it does not apply to transfer courses.
  • The ARP may not be applied to a course on a Pass/No Credit basis.
  • Students cannot receive transfer credit for the same course (based on the registrar鈥檚 determination of equivalency) that received academic renewal.
  • The ARP may not be applied to any course where the student was previously found responsible for violating the academic code of conduct.
  • Once applied, academic renewal cannot be reversed.
  • The student must request the academic renewal process in writing to the Academic Standing and Review Committee; the application of the ARP will not be automatic.
  • Academic Renewal differs from the course repeat policy, allowing students to repeat courses to replace the original grade. Students must utilize the undergraduate repeat policy if repeating the course is required for their degree progression or to meet particular grade-based prerequisites.

Academic Forgiveness

Academic Forgiveness occurs when a student wishes to have specific grades removed from their GPA calculation.  In such cases, students make a written request to the Academic Standards Committee to have up to 3 letter grades of D (including D+ and D-) or F removed from the GPA calculation.  Please note that the grades remain on the transcript when such requests are granted. Academic forgiveness may not be used for courses or programs requiring a specific grade in a gateway or prerequisite courses to attempt to bypass that requirement.  Instead, students need to repeat the course and apply the grade replacement policy stated below.
